Big addition to Memorial Boulevard in Little Havana
Saturday was the big day for the unveiling of the Cruceiro Xacobeo Monument at Cuban Memorial Park in Little Havana! What's a Cruceiro, you ask? It's like a super-sized Galician high cross, usually showing Jesus on the cross. Commissioner Joe Carollo teamed up with the Association of Galician Entrepreneurs of the USA and the Brotherhood of Galegos Forever to bring this awesome monument all the way from Spain to Miami. And get this—it's not just any Cruceiro, it's the biggest one in the whole wide world! Standing tall alongside the Monolith marking Km 6,640 of the Miami to Santiago de Compostela route, it's a sight to behold.
But wait, there's more! This monument isn't just a pretty sculpture. Nope, it's a symbol of the deep historical connections between Spain, Cuba, and the good ol' USA. It's like the long-lost twin of the Cruceiro do Hío at the Church of San Andrés in Hío, Pontevedra, which was crafted back in 1872. Just like its sibling, the Cruceiro Xacobeo is made from a single mighty block of granite. Talk about impressive!
And guess who brought this masterpiece to life? None other than Santiago Besada, a talented artist from Galicia who's no stranger to creating these stunning Cruceiros along the Camino de Santiago. On this monumental beauty, you'll find maps showcasing the beauty of Galicia, Cuba, and good ol' Florida.
Now, here's the cherry on top: the whole project was put together under the watchful eye of the Capital Programs Division of the Miami Department of Parks and Recreation. It's a true team effort to bring a piece of history and art right into our backyard. Let's give a round of applause for this fantastic addition to our community!
